Since 2022, a shifting list of scientists, engineers, military personnel and institutional employees connected to aerospace, nuclear-security and advanced-research organizations has drawn public and federal attention.

On April 20, 2026, the House Oversight Committee requested briefings from the Department of Energy, Department of War, FBI and NASA concerning “at least ten” deaths or disappearances. Importantly, the committee described the underlying reports as unconfirmed public reporting. The FBI subsequently said it was coordinating with other agencies to look for possible connections. No publicly released federal finding has established a common perpetrator, operation or cause.

OPEN MISSING-PERSON CASES

• Anthony “Tony” Chavez — Retired Los Alamos construction/HVAC foreman; missing since May 2025.

• Monica Jacinto Reza — JPL materials engineer and co-developer of a high-temperature rocket-engine alloy; missing since June 2025.

• Steven Abel Garcia — Government contractor/property custodian connected to the Kansas City National Security Campus; missing since August 2025.

• Maj. Gen. William Neil McCasland — Retired Air Force Research Laboratory commander and astronautical engineer; missing since February 2026. Authorities have publicly reported no evidence of foul play.

UNRESOLVED OR PUBLICLY INCOMPLETE DEATH FINDINGS

• Melissa Casias — Los Alamos administrative assistant; disappeared in June 2025. Her remains were recovered in May 2026. The autopsy established a gunshot wound to the head as the cause of death, but the manner remains undetermined because investigators could not determine whether it was self-inflicted, homicidal or otherwise. Two phones were reportedly found factory-reset.

• Frank Werner Maiwald — JPL instrument researcher; died in July 2024. No cause has been publicly disclosed.

• Michael David Hicks — Former JPL planetary scientist; died in July 2023. His family reported known medical problems, while the specific cause was kept private.

CASES WITH IDENTIFIED ACCIDENTAL, MEDICAL OR CRIMINAL CIRCUMSTANCES

• Joshua Kyle LeBlanc — ADDED — NASA Marshall electrical engineer who worked on nuclear-propulsion projects. He died July 22, 2025, after his Tesla left an Alabama roadway, struck a guardrail and trees, and caught fire. His movements before the crash raised questions for his family, but no public evidence connects his death to the other cases.

• Jason Thomas — Novartis chemical biologist; disappeared in December 2025 and was recovered from a Massachusetts lake in March 2026. Authorities reported that no foul play was suspected.

• Nuno Loureiro — MIT plasma and fusion physicist; murdered in December 2025. The FBI concluded that Claudio Manuel Neves Valente acted alone and found no terrorism nexus.

• Carl Grillmair — Caltech astrophysicist; murdered in February 2026. A suspect was charged following an alleged local carjacking and burglary sequence.

• Amy Eskridge — Alabama exotic-propulsion researcher; died in June 2022. Authorities ruled her death a suicide. Claims about threats or harassment before her death remain allegations and require attribution.

• Matthew James Sullivan — ADJACENT CASE ADDED — Former Air Force intelligence officer and Bronze Star recipient; died in May 2024. Medical-examiner findings reported an accidental mixed-drug overdose. Representative Eric Burlison later asked the FBI about Sullivan after reports claimed that he had intended to speak with congressional investigators concerning UAP programs. He was not a scientist or propulsion engineer and should remain identified as an adjacent military-intelligence case.
